How to Pack for University Whilst Making the Most of Self-Storage
30/05/2024 15:13
If you’re off to University this September, and are feeling overwhelmed at the prospect of moving away from home, making new friends, studying for a degree AND packing your life up and into a small, single room – then we’re here to help! We might not be able to write your essays for you – but we can certainly give you some tried and tested advice when it comes to storing and organising your worldly possessions before the big move…
1. Start with a List
Before you dive straight into the packing, make a checklist of everything you think you’ll need. Break it down into categories like clothing, toiletries, school supplies, and Uni halls’ essentials. This will help to keep you organised and ensure you don’t forget anything important, or in some cases – overpack!
If you are in contact with any of your future flatmates – make a list together of kitchen equipment you may be bringing with you. This will save you all turning up with a giant frying pan or sandwich toaster machine each – because who needs 5 sandwich toasters anyway?
2. Pack Smart
Remember, University halls are small. You won’t need your entire wardrobe, so pack only what’s essential and seasonal. Use space-saving hacks like vacuum-sealed bags for clothes, and packing cubes for smaller items like shoes and accessories. Don’t forget to label your boxes! You’ll thank yourself later when it comes to unpacking…
3. Think Multi-Functional
Bring items that serve multiple purposes. A storage ottoman can double up as a seat as well as a place to store extra blankets or bulkier winter clothes. Over-the-door organisers are also great for shoes, toiletries, and even snacks without the need for a hammer and nails!
4. Utilise Self-Storage for the Extras
Here’s where self-storage comes to the rescue. Not everything you own needs to be in your Uni halls all at once. Self-storage is perfect for:
• Seasonal Clothes: Keep your winter coats and boots in storage until you need them.
• Sports Equipment: No need to clutter your room with your hockey sticks or golf clubs.
• Extra Furniture: If you’re bringing furniture from home, you might not need it all right away.
5. Packing for Storage
When packing items for storage, make sure they’re clean and completely dry beforehand to prevent any mould and mildew from building up whilst stored. Use sturdy boxes and label them clearly so you can find things easily when collecting at a later date. Wrap fragile items in bubble wrap or towels for extra protection.
6. Access and Security
Choose a storage facility that offers 24/7 access. Make sure it’s secure with good lighting, cameras, and secured entry. You want to feel confident that your stuff is safe while you focus on your studies.
7. Keep It Accessible
Put the items you’re most likely to need at the front of your storage unit. That way, you won’t have to dig through everything to find what you’re looking for.
Packing for university doesn’t have to be overwhelming. With a little planning and the help of a self-storage unit, you can bring everything you need without overcrowding your new room.
