It's Almost Time to Put Away the Christmas Decorations - Storage Tips Storing your Christmas Decoration

It’s the festive season which can only mean it’s time to get out the Christmas decorations. If you find yourself spending hours sorting baubles or untangling the tree lights after you bundled them away last year, or even worse, having to throw away damaged decorations, we can help. We’ve put together our top tips on how to store your Christmas decorations safely so you can skip the hassle next year!

1.    Use clear sealable bags/tubs

If you like to organise your decorations in a certain way, for example by colour or theme, then clear sealable bags or clear tubs are the way to go. Not only do they make it easy to organise and find what you need, the chances are you already have some stashed away in your kitchen! They’re also great for protecting your decorations from dust, damp and damage.

2.    Wrap your lights around cardboard

We’ve all been there, in January you scrunch the Christmas tree lights up, chuck them in a box only to have to spend hours untangling them the following December. This year, save yourself the stress and wrap your lights around spare pieces of cardboard. Tear off an appropriately sized piece of cardboard (you’re bound to have plenty left over once the presents are unwrapped!) and simply wrap your lights around them. You can also use leftover wrapping paper tubes. This will not only prevent tangling, but it is much less likely to result in bulbs being broken.

3.    Protect glass ornaments with coffee filters

Got a delicate or treasured decoration? Grab yourself a plastic tub and some coffee filters. Coffee filters are soft, cheap, easy to pick up in the supermarket and unlike materials such as cottonwool, they won’t leave you picking fibres off your decorations. Simply pop your fragile ornament in a coffee filter and place it in the tub. The high sides of the filter will stop your ornament rolling around too.

4.    Protect your tree

One for the artificial tree lovers amongst us, if you want to get many years of use out of your Christmas tree, you need to make sure you’re looking after it. Storing it in the box can take up a lot of room, not to mention cardboard can get damp. A better alternative is to shrink wrap your tree. This will protect it from any less than favourable conditions and is more storage convenient.

5.    Hang your wreaths

It is easy for wreaths to get squashed if they’re put in boxes, this is especially disappointing if yours is intricately decorated. For this reason, we recommend hanging your wreaths. You can do this by placing them in a dust bag and then putting them on a coat hook or clothes hanger. This way they stay clean and without any risk of being crushed by heavier items.
