6 tips for students moving out

27/07/2023 15:06

It’s that time of year when students are frantically packing their belongings up and moving across the country back to their parent’s house.

Need some help doing this as slick and smoothly as possible? Here are our top tips…

1.     Downsize

Let’s be honest: students accumulate a lot of stuff. That T-shirt you got for free at a fresher’s fair. Empty beer bottles. Those plants you told yourself you’d take care of, only to forget to water three weeks on. Packing is the perfect opportunity to go through your items and get rid of the bits you don’t really use – or need. You can recycle them, donate them to charity, or even sell items if you’re finishing uni with little savings.

2.     Vacuum pack

Clothing and bedding might not weigh much, but they can take up a lot of space. Get yourself a couple of vacuum bags. These will compress your items and make them much flatter to stack.

3.     Keep track of the weather

If you need to move out of your house but aren’t sure which day to do it on, be sure to check the weather first. You probably won’t want to do it in the pouring rain. Likewise, it won’t be pleasant doing it in the scorching heat. Make sure you dress in comfy, loose clothing and be prepared to get a sweat on!

4.     Label your boxes

At the time, labelling the contents of all your boxes may seem a little unnecessary. But it will make the process a lot more organised and allow you to distribute items quicker at home. If you want to be extra organised, label each box with the room it’s going in.

5.       Communicate with your housemates

If possible, avoid moving out on the same day as all of your housemates. Moving out is manic enough when one person is doing it – imagine all of you tirelessly carrying things in and out of the house, fighting for space on the stairs, and queuing for a parking spot as near to the door as possible. Don’t make the situation more stressful than it already is. Communicate with your housemates!

6.     Store items

If you’re only going to be spending the summer back home, it seems a little silly lugging all your belongings home to your parents, only to have to transport them back in September, doesn’t it? This is particularly true if you’ve got items that are awkward to transport, like beds, kitchen crockery, or a desk.

Of course, in an ideal world, you could simply move these items from one student house directly into another. However, most student houses won’t let you move in until September. And paying rent, just to hold some items you aren’t using over the summer, can be expensive. So, the obvious solution is to put your items into storage. This will be cheaper, require less logistics, and you can rest assured knowing your belongings are in safe hands.
