7 tips for preserving your items in storage

So, you’re putting some belongings into storage. You’ve packed everything up, started loading it in, and a little voice in the back of your head is concerned about what state it will all be in when you need to take everything back out later down the line. What will be broken, crushed, damp, covered in mould, or rotting away in the back of your storage unit? Well, nothing – not in our book, anyway!
Here are our top tips for keeping your stored belongings in great condition.
1. Research
Take a look at different storage units available in your area. Read their reviews and scout the place out before you start moving any stuff in. If your belongings are important to you, then make sure you’re handing them over to a professional team with high security and high standards of cleanliness. If in doubt, don’t be afraid to ask questions.
2. Clean your items
Give your belongings a spring clean before you place them into storage. This way, they’ll have the best chance of staying fresh. It’s also a good opportunity to give your items a once-over and check for any signs of damage before putting them into storage.
3. Wrap up fragile items
Items that are likely to break, such as crockery, need a decent layer of bubble wrap. We also recommend adding scrunched up paper into any gaps in your boxes. This will stop the boxes collapsing over time.
4. Stack wisely
It’s not rocket science, but make sure the heavy items get stacked at the bottom. Also, think about what you’re likely to be removing from the storage unit first. Don’t put these items right at the back! And if necessary, sketch a quick floorplan so that you know exactly what you have stored where.
5. Add shelves
Adding a shelf unit to your self storage container can make things a lot tidier and stops you having to stack boxes directly on top of each other. This means things are far less likely to get squashed! Alternatively, if you are going to stack boxes directly on top of each other, try and use uniform boxes. These will fit together much better than mix and match random ones, which will make your stacking towers much more sturdy.
6. Remove any moisture
Avoid items getting damp and damaged by sprinkling some silica gel packets into your boxes. These will absorb any moisture that gets into your unit. We recommend adding these into boxes with electrical items, paper items (like books and photo albums), metal objects that risk rusting, and anything with extra sentimental value that you cannot risk getting damaged!
7. Check on your items
If your belongings are going to be locked up for a long time, it might be worth checking in on things every so often. If you moved your items in during the summer, head to your storage unit during the winter to make sure everything is still dry, safe, and hasn’t suffered during temperature changes.
