How to deal with moving anxiety

18/09/2020 12:56

The old saying goes that moving house is the most stressful time of your life. It’s a real rollercoaster of emotions, with nostalgia for the home you’re leaving behind, legal paperwork to get filled out and all your belongings to get packed away. It’s the exciting start of a new chapter, but equally it involves a lot of changes and can cause a lot of stress and anxiety.

Moving during the Coronavirus pandemic adds even more stress to that situation, with the economy struggling to recover from the impacts of lockdown. Yet it’s also an incredibly tempting time to move, with the stamp duty holiday meaning that there may never be a better time financially to take the plunge and move house. So what can we do to limit the impacts of moving stress?

Why do we get moving anxiety?

There’s no one trigger or cause of stress when moving house; instead, there are a lot of smaller factors that add up to make things stressful.

• Change — Your new home layout to work with, you or your partner may be starting a new job and your children may be moving schools too. These changes are unavoidable, so while it’s normal to be anxious about them, try to not let them bother you.

• Finances — Buying a home is a huge financial commitment and there are huge costs just involved in moving.

• Time — Packing up your entire life and then moving them to a new location inevitably takes an awful lot of time and you’ll likely have to assign an entire day to getting things

How to get some sense of control over your anxiety

If you’re suffering from anxiety or a feeling of being overwhelmed, here are our tips on trying to lower than anxiety.

Have a can-do attitude

It’s easier said than done but adopting a positive attitude will definitely help you through the moving process. You’re likely moving for good reasons, be it moving into a bigger house or to be closer to family, so focus on those and consider all the good things and think about the exciting new opportunities.

Do your research

Stepping into the unknown is scary, but this is a good reason to do your research and find out as much as you can on your new area. Find things to do, where the nearest shops and doctors’ surgery is, as well as finding activities and other things near you that will keep you happy. This small step can help you feel in control when you move in to your new home.

Be prepared and start early

If you’re moving house there’s nothing worse than panicking and having to pack everything quickly. Be sure to start packing as early as you can, get those boxes labelled up properly and figure out a plan of action for moving day as quickly as you can.

Get as much help as you can

Whether you’re relocating your entire family or moving out alone, you aren’t alone at all. Friends and family are usually more than happy to help. Having their company can help you relax and even enjoy the experience! If the job is too big, don’t be afraid to hire professionals.

Consider how storage can help relieve some headaches

If you’re decluttering and decisions over what to keep and what to get rid of is just too much, consider getting a self-storage unit for your move. It can either buy you some time if there’s a gap between when you have to leave your current home and enter your new home, plus it can buy you some breathing space over difficult decisions over your belongings.

Self-storage is a top way to stay organised and keep stress levels down. Why not consider storing some things with us here at M-Store?
