How to prepare your furniture for self storage
05/07/2023 12:15
Whether you’re moving house and need a safe place to store your furniture or you’re looking to put your garden furniture away for winter, self storage is a great option. Before storing your furniture, it is a good idea to make sure it is properly prepared. We’ve put together our top tips to help you make the whole process as smooth as possible.
Clean your furniture
This is an obvious one but make sure your furniture is clean and dry before you put it into storage. Failing to clean it could result in your furniture becoming damaged by dirt and damp.
Wipe each piece down to ensure it is free from things like crumbs and the debris from day-to-day life. If you’re storing chairs, sofas, or anything else that includes soft furnishings, make sure you remove the cushions and hoover any trapped dirt. For wooden furniture, it’s a beneficial to wax it before storing to help keep it moisturised.
Make your furniture as easy as possible to store
This should be another obvious one, but making your furniture as easy to store as possible will save you loads of headache and fancy manoeuvring later on! Flatpack everything you possibly can and make sure you keep screws, handles, instructions and spare parts together.
Invest in bubble wrap or covers
Although it’s a little extra effort, taking the time to properly wrap your furniture, especially pricey or antique pieces will give you peace of mind that they’ll remain in pristine condition. To make this even easier, at M Store we have a whole host of bubble wrap, tape and boxes that we can send directly to your home.
Arrange transport
If you have large or bulky items, it is a good idea to arrange appropriate transport ahead of time. Attempting to squeeze items into your car could lead to damage and multiple trips. If you need help arranging transport, we can also assist with van hire.
