Top tips for couples moving in together

2024, a new year, a fresh start – perhaps the beginnings of a new adventure together with your better half?

I’ve you’ve decided that this is the year you and your partner make the big move in together, it can be a wonderful milestone – that is until you realise just how much ‘stuff’ you each have, and the lack of space available to find a home for it all!

Fear not… we have a few tips and things to consider to help make that transition as seamless and argument-free as possible.

Create a joint inventory

Whether you’re moving into a brand-new place together, or you’re moving into your partner's already established home (or vice versa) then the best and most important place to start is by making an inventory of what you need TOGETHER, outlining the important everyday items – we’re talking toasters, microwaves, kettles etc to avoid doubling up because nobody needs two microwaves… once you’ve made a list of all the things needed, decide between you who will bring or buy what, and better still, you can sell any duplicates locally – making for a bit of pocket money to put aside for a rainy day, or arrange for them to be stored safely (just in case things don’t work out!)

Agree on Interior themes

Once the important bits are organised, you can start thinking about the prettier side of things, like home décor and bed sheet sets. It’s vital to agree mutually on what sort of aesthetic you want to achieve in your new home together to avoid colour clashing and living in a mis-mash of prints and patterns. Keep it simple and stick to a neutral theme, so that together you can gradually add (or take away) decorative items like cushions and ornaments, whilst sticking to the same overall look.

Declutter individually

Once everyday item itineraries and colour themes have been decided on, it’s time to take a look at decluttering beforehand as individuals. Before the big move, each party should take a good look at which of their own possessions are important and should be kept, and which are quite simply, taking up valuable space that’s about to be decreased by 50%.

Sentimental items like photographs are often the first of many things that can irritate when moving in together. Your partner may not be able to understand why you want to move in together with your box of childhood trinkets in tow, and equally – you may not be able to fathom why they won’t get rid of their first-ever Nintendo console to make room for you and your things. If this occurs, be mindful that different things have different meanings to different people, and it doesn’t have to cause tension in your new home.

Could you store it?

If either of you really can’t bear to say goodbye to your prized or sentimental possessions, but at the same time simply do not have the space in your new home to accommodate them all, then there are plenty of options to resolve this – the first and most obvious being self-storage.

M-Store Self Storage specialises in secure, flexible, and safe domestic storage solutions, offering you peace of mind in storing your sentimental possessions for as little or as long as needed.
