What to do with your belongings before long-term travel

If you’re soon to be heading off on an exciting trip around the world, chances are you aren’t going to be hauling all your belongings around the world with you too. The more likely scenario is that you have a bunch of stuff to leave behind – and no idea what to do with it all.
The options
If you currently live in rented housing, you could continue paying your rent so that you can keep your belongings there. But this is likely to be expensive, and you’ll want all the savings you can get while travelling! There’s also the risk that, while you’re away, the landlord could announce that they’re putting the property up for sale and you need to move your things out. This will be tricky to do while you’re on the other side of the globe.
Alternatively, you could store your belongings at a friend or family’s place, but this will only work if they have a big enough property to do so.
Often, the best solution is to put your items into the safe hands of a storage unit.
Why use a storage unit?
Some of the benefits of using self storage include:
· They’re significantly cheaper than keeping up your rent.
· You’ll be placing your precious belongings in the hands of professionals. No need to fall out with Uncle Steve because he’s let all your belongings get damp and damaged in his garage!
· They’re flexible – you can keep your belongings in storage for as long or little as you need.
· No responsibility – you’re not leaving your items in the hands of a friend or family member to look after, nor are you having to worry about your belongings while you should be enjoying travelling.
· Safety – many storage units (like ours) have high levels of security to ensure your items are kept safe and sound. This includes 24/7 security footage, alarm systems, a high perimeter fence, and an experienced team
Bonus: If you are renting, you can always sublet your room/property in order to make some extra income while you travel. If so, you’ll probably still want to move your belongings out, so that your new tenant has enough space and to avoid any items getting mixed up. So, opting for a storage unit would still be the go-to solution.
