Our Top Tips for Getting your E-Commerce Business Off the Ground in 2023

Online shopping was already on the rise but saw a dramatic boom in 2020 when many businesses turned to the internet to keep offering their products during the lockdowns. If you’ve been contemplating starting your own ecommerce business, but you’re not sure where to start, we can help. We’ve rounded up the top tips on how to get your e-commerce business started – and how we can help with storing and managing stock.

If you’re already clued up on ecommerce and just need help with stock storage, you can skip to the bottom to find out more about our business storage solutions!

Decide on your product

Okay, we know this is an obvious one, but it is a very important first step! You need to work out exactly what you want to sell and be consistent with it. If you want to attract loyal customers, you can’t sell socks one day and pet bowls the next as it makes it difficult for customers to understand your brand as well as find products they want. Instead narrow your focus, you can even consider what your own talents are, for example, woodcraft, jewellery making, painting, knitting, etc.

Choose where you want to sell your products

Before you can start selling, you need to decide which platform you’re going to use to advertise your products. If you’re just starting out you may want to consider options like Etsy or even Depop as they offer easier start up options, and you don’t have to invest time and money into a website. If you would prefer to have a website, Shopify and Wix offer beginner friendly options.

Ensure you can take payments

For those who are just starting out and have limited business experience, PayPal is a good place to start. Though it was initially designed for individuals, PayPal is now used as standard across a variety of different businesses and offers security for both sellers and buyers.

Create your brand

The next step (and hopefully a fun one!) is deciding how you want your brand to look. This includes everything from choosing a business name and creating a logo to deciding on your brand colours and fonts. Make sure your brand accurately reflects you and your business and try to avoid neon colours and hard to read fonts as they can be off putting and cause accessibility issues.

Make people aware of your brand

If no one knows about your business, no one will buy from you! Make sure you get set up on relevant social media and research your target audience so you can post content regularly that will appeal to them. If you have a website, you should also look at setting up a search engine optimisation strategy to ensure your website appears in search engine rankings. Don’t forget to utilise family and friends by asking them to share your content!

Organise your stock

Stock management is another important step and one where M Store can help! It’s vital that you know what you have in stock and, if you have different items, how much inventory you have of each. If your items are bulkier or you need large amounts of stock, storing them at home may not be a practical solution. If this is the case, we can help. At M Store, we have flexible storage solutions that can be uniquely tailored to suit you and your business. Our professional team can even take deliveries for you and ensure that your goods are safely stored in your storage unit!
