How to Pack Items into Storage

Whatever your reasons for using self-storage, it is an excellent way of keeping your possessions safe and secure! If you’re planning to use self-storage in the future, we’ve put together our top tips for helping you to make the most of your unit space and the best way to pack your things to ensure there is no chance of damage.

Decide what size unit you need

Making sure you have the correct sized unit for your items is crucial to ensuring they aren’t too crammed in and likely to squish other items. You can use our handy storage space calculator to help you decide what amount of space you need!

Use good quality boxes

If you decide to pack your items into boxes, ensure you use thick cardboard or better yet, invest in plastic boxes. Cardboard boxes are more likely to tear or open at the bottom, as well as being more difficult to stack, using boxes that are a more solid material offers better protection for your items. At M Store, we offer an extensive range of boxes, tape and bubble wrap that we can send out to your home.

Wrap any fragile items

For extra peace of mind, it is always a great idea to wrap any delicate items. You can do this with bubble wrap, fabric or use loose fill chips. Don’t forget to mark the outside of the box too so you remember where your fragile items are!

Label the outside of your boxes

This step is often forgotten about but it is very useful! Taking the time to quickly label your boxes will ensure you don’t have to dig through everything to find an item you need. When putting your boxes into storage, make sure that the labels are still visibe.

Think about the layout of your items

If you’re going to be storing your items for a considerable length of time and/or will need to make frequent trips to your unit, it is beneficial to think about the layout as you’re packing. For example, if you have items you will need to take in and out regularly, put those nearer to the front of your unit to avoid having to move other things to access them. Similarly, you’ll want to put heavier boxes on the floor and stack lighter boxes on top of them.

Pack your boxes sensibly

Whilst packing your boxes to capacity to save space is great, it is important to ensure that you can actually lift those boxes once they’re packed. If this is a concern, take a few seconds to check you can lift the box still as you pack.
