Time to Extend Upwards? 5 Alternative Uses for your Attic

Do you have an attic space that you just can’t decide what to do with? Maybe it’s packed full of ‘stuff’ and you’re ready to start the new year off by decluttering and transforming your space. Whatever your reasons, we’ve put together five ideas for making the most of that unused attic space. Read on to get inspired!

1.    Create a reading nook

Book worms rejoice! Attic spaces make fantastic reading nooks as they’re quiet and secluded, letting you focus on that entrepreneurial book or get lost in a fantasy world. Just set up some shelving for your books, add some lighting and a cosy place to sit, and you’re ready to go. If your ceilings are too low for a chair, you can use a beanbag instead. Battery operated fairylights are also great lamp alternatives and create a magical effect.

2.    Turn it into a guest room

Perhaps an obvious one, but if you’re fortunate enough to have a larger attic space, turning it into a guest room is a brilliant option. This is particularly useful if you have a large extended family or you just love to host! Not only does this give you better sleeping arrangements but converting that space into another bedroom could actually add value onto your home.

3.    Turn it into an office or creative space

Whether you’re self-employed, work from home or just need a quiet room to study in, attics make great office spaces. There is a certain cocoon feeling to attics that help you shut out distraction. If you’re someone who loves to create, attics are also good writing rooms or mini studios for painting, pottery and more! Having your creative space in one area allows you to focus and ensures you don’t have to hunt around your house for missing tools/items.

4.    Create a games room

If you have little ones or even teenagers, a games room could be the perfect option for your attic space. It keeps toys in one area and provides children with their own space to relax and play. They can even get involved in the design and decoration! If you have older children, you can consider putting in a TV and games console – a great solution if you don’t want to have screens in the bedrooms!

5.    Use it as a closet

If you’re a fashionista who just loves to collect, converting your unused attic into a closet is the way to go. Add shelving to create shoe space, and, if your space isn’t quite big enough for wardrobes, you can use a clothing rail to hang all your best pieces. If you’re feeling extra boujee, (and if your space allows) you can add a full-length mirror, rug and vanity to create the ultimate walk-in wardrobe style space.
