4 Ways to Make More Space at Home (without knocking down walls)

Over the last 12 months we have all spent an unheard of amount of time at home, sharing our space with those we love for days, weeks and months on end.  No matter how much work you’ve put into your living space up until this point, you can’t help but have started to consider ways to create a little more room at home for everyone to spread out.  Do you have to knock down walls or build new ones to get that? We don’t think so.  A few clever storage solutions and a little rejigging around the place and you can make a whole lot of space from nowhere.  Try these:

Expand the Entrance Hall

The porch or entryway can end up being dead space, or worse, an utter wasteland filled with everything dumped and discarded when you walk in the front door. Even the tiniest coats and shoes can pile up over time! Make sure you have plenty of hooks on the walls for bags, coats and scarves, try some open shelving down low for shoes and up higher for keys, post, wallets: all those things you want to let go of the second you get home and lastly a big mirror on the wall of your hallway can reflect the light and make a space seem twice the size instantly.

Kitchen Fixes

Often the busiest room in the house, being able to navigate your kitchen is an absolute must.  Go for clever storage solutions to maximise space for the whole family.  Consider vertical storage inside cupboards or pantries and organise your drawers with dividers and caddies.  Don’t forget to use those walls too – an overhead pan rack or wall mounted knives can save so much space.

Get Creative in the Living Room

Where the whole family come together or pass through going about their day, the living room can end up collecting all kinds of detritus before you know it.  Multi-purpose furniture in the lounge can be a game changer.  Try an ottoman you can store the kids toys in at the end of the day or perhaps a coffee table or dresser with handy drawers you can scoop everything into for a quick tidy.

Don’t Hoard Stuff in the Garage

Whilst perfect for holding those things you’re going to use regularly, do you really want to be cluttering up the garage with things you know you won’t be using for another six months at least? We’re talking skis and snowboards through the summer months and surf boards through those cold winter spells.  Now might be the time to think about investing in an external storage unit to keep hold of those bulkier items until it’s time to play with them again and you can make room in there for the car!
