The weird and wonderful things that became popular during covid, that should probably go into storage.

Thankfully COVID, Lockdowns, Social Distancing and all the difficulties that came with it are a thing of the past… and when we look back, it’s difficult to envisage yourself sat in your pyjamas eating pizza at 11am, desperately looking forward to your permitted one-hour daily walk. Oh, how odd it was back then.

With the pandemic, came the trends (remember banana bread?) - but some of the things that helped keep us busy during these times are still hanging around the house, no longer serving a purpose and quite frankly causing unnecessary clutter and strange COVID-19 flashbacks…

Fitness Equipment

We get it, exercising during the lockdowns was hard. Gyms were closed, time outside was limited to an hour, and your running buddy was locked away in their own homes too. That’s where the boom in at-home fitness equipment came into play, with 52% of UK consumers purchasing some form of fitness equipment during 2020 – we’re talking yoga mats, dumbbell sets, peloton bikes and even treadmills in the living room!

They served their purpose at the time, with many of us joining in with Joe Wicks on YouTube and following at-home workouts on fitness apps, but since life (and gyms) have returned to normal, the likelihood is that now that peloton is coming in very handy as a clothes horse - and those dumbbells seem to serve a better purpose as a door stop.

Baking equipment

During 2020, kitchens up and down the country resembled something of an un-cut scene from the Great British Bake Off, with Banana Bread being up there with one of the top trends of Lockdowns one and two.

With baking came space-invading equipment – from muffin tins to free-standing cake mixers, there just never seemed to be enough cupboards to keep it all in! Much like fitness equipment, once the local patisserie re-opened, these items were likely never to be used regularly again; so If you’re finding your kitchen is full of post-lockdown baking clutter, it might be time to start thinking about if you’re ever actually going be baking banana bread again as you did back in 2020.

Home Office Equipment

First came office closures, then came working from home. At the start of the pandemic, many of us found ourselves grabbing a laptop and setting up a temporary workspace on the kitchen table, naively thinking we would all be back in the office in a few week's time. Four months and multiple local lockdowns later, fully equipped home offices were making their way into spare rooms up and down the UK, with desks, office chairs, printers, and desktop computers quickly replacing those laptops on the dining table.

In the COVID-free times we’re currently living in, 60% of workers are now back in the office full time – so where does that leave the shiny new desk and multiple monitors bought in to aid working from home during the pandemic? Clogging up the spare room is where.

All of the trends and the equipment that came with them during lockdown still serve a purpose, perhaps not as regularly as they once did – but that’s not to say they’ll never come to good use again.

After all, you spent your hard-earned money on these things at the time, so it’s totally understandable that you might not want to fully part ways with them just yet – even if you are finding them to be cluttering up your home.

The answer? Self-storage. Self-storage is a brilliant way to keep things you no longer use, but still need safe and out of the way for however long you need them to be.
