Most rural and domestic thefts are committed under the cover of darkness, and as the nights draw in and evenings become shorter, the window of opportunity for these crimes to take place widens. Unfortunately - It makes sense. In fact, according to NFU Mutual, a leading insurance provider that grew from strong agricultural roots, rural crime rates across the UK shot up by 22% in 2022 vs. 2021, costing the UK an estimated £49.5m. Sadly this figure is only set to rise due to the increase in organised crime groups using modern technology such as drones to assist with identifying areas to prey on.

So, what exactly are these criminals targeting?

Alongside fuel, the most common targeted goods being stolen from farming communities are quad bikes and GPS systems, which saw a rise of 34% in 2022 and cost the UK an estimated £3m.

According to the Metropolitan Police, in more domestic communities the top five most stolen items from sheds and outbuildings are:

-Bikes

-Lawnmowers

-Sports equipment (golf clubs, surfboards etc)

-Power tools

-Garden tools

Unsurprisingly, these items are easy to “grab and go” undetected in the middle of darkness, with many people failing to secure their sheds like they would secure their homes – often using something like an easily breakable padlock to protect the valuable contents inside.
