Five benefits to lockdown decluttering

Five benefits to lockdown decluttering

17/04/2020 17:30

With no immediate end in sight to the coronavirus crisis engulfing the world, we’re all going to be in our homes a lot more for the foreseeable future due to the government’s lockdown restrictions. Seeing as we’re going to be in our homes an awful lot more than usual, we’ll all want to do what we can to make sure that they’re lovely places to be.

Part of making your home a nicer environment is decluttering; a good old fashioned spring clean is supposed to be good for the soul and seeing how studies show that having clutter around the home can add to stress, now’s as good a time as any to get tidying!

The hard work of tidying up will definitely have some short-term and long term benefits too; here’s our list of five reasons why you should have a lockdown tidy up…

You’ll have more space to exercise

Seeing as we’re not allowed out of the house for much at all, it’ll be tough for many of us to keep our fitness levels high and stay in tip-top shape. This would be doubly hard in a home filled with belongings you don’t need at the moment — how are you going to be able to do a set of burpees or plank properly if you have piles of your possessions everywhere?

It’s good for your mental health

Lockdown is going to prove difficult enough, as we all deal with a huge amount of change and being cooped up indoors. The last thing we need is to add to our own stress; studies have shown that a cluttered home adds to our stress levels and can have adverse effects on our mental health. So lighten the load and tidy!

Stave off lockdown boredom

There’s only so many boxsets in the world you’ll be able to watch during lockdown — so we’ll all be looking for things to keep us busy and entertain us. While a spring clean might sound horrible most of the time, it could prove unusually entertaining during lockdown!

Create a space to work in

If you’re having to work from home for the first time, making that transition to working effectively at home is tough enough even if you do have a desk or a space to work in. If you don’t, it’s even more difficult — decluttering can create more space at home and give you room to create a place to work effectively.

Your life will be easier post-lockdown

Do you find every day that you’re fighting against too many clothes in your wardrobe? Perhaps you have a cupboard where you open the door and things fall on top of you? Maybe you just want to reclaim that spare room that’s filled with your clutter? Either way, you’ll find that things will be that little bit better once the lockdown is lifted if you use this time well and get tidying!
