How to Turn Your Spare Room into an Income Stream

How to Turn Your Spare Room into an Income Stream

15/09/2023 15:00

Lots of homes have a spare room collecting dust. Perhaps it used to the kid’s room, only they headed to uni and moved out years ago. Or you swore it was going to become your home office, but you never got round to piecing it together. Instead, it became filled with clutter.

Equally, more and more people are looking for ways to make some extra income – especially in today’s economic climate, where the cost of living crisis is eating many of us alive.

So, why not combine these two factors and turn your spare room into a money-maker? And by that we mean: it’s time to get a lodger.

The demand for rooms

We all know that there’s currently a housing crisis in the UK. And with affordable rent becoming more and more out of reach, letting out a spare room in your household is becoming an increasingly attractive option for many. SpareRoom has even gone as far to claim that the UK’s rental crisis could be solved by renting out spare bedrooms.

They explain: “There are actually around 21 million empty spare rooms in homes in England alone. If just 2% of those homeowners rented out their spare rooms, we’d create a virtual city the size of Manchester (without laying a single brick or changing a single law).”

Prepping for a lodger

So, it’s a win-win for everyone, right? But of course, before you welcome a lodger to your household, you need to get things ready. And so, you need to pluck up the courage – and motivation – to clear your messy, neglected spare room out. That means transporting all the belongings in this room elsewhere. Now, redirecting an entire room’s worth of items to another part of your house is probably an impossible task. Where will it all fit? What would be a much easier option, on the other hand, would be placing it all into a safe, secure, accessible self-storage unit.

A fair trade

According to data from SpareRoom, the average room rent in the UK is £626 per calendar month (or £554 excluding London). You’ll almost definitely be paying far less than this to rent a self-storage unit, meaning you’ll still be making plenty of profit.
